HOW MUCH INDEPENDENT ARE WE?

By: Latika Arora ,Bjmc-3(a)

India got its independence from the clutches of British rule on 15th August 1947. It was this day when India’s tricolor flag was unfolded by Pandit Nehru on the barricades of the Red Fort at Delhi. Each and every patriotic soul watched with excitement and paid tribute to thousands of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom but are we really independent. We could be but this growing terrorism is chubbing and cutting down our wings.

It’s really surprising and sorrowful for a country whose history is embellished with the glowing accounts of gifted women like Gargi, Razia, Laxmibai, Indira Gandhi and Mother Teresa - more than 40% women are illiterate. Less than 10% find representation in Legislature and Parliament, more than 60% women in rural area are married off before they are 18.The average Indian female has only 1.2 years of schooling.

The first and foremost issue that occupies frequently is how independent we are in reality and whether we are really independent? Those who were oppressed, deprived and neglected in those days still remained the same. No change has appeared in their life style. The ’Sun of Liberty’ has risen for those who can move the stick and dominate over the less fortunate by any and all means.

Kashmir trapped in a nightmare from which it can't seem to emerge, a nightmare that has claimed more than 60,000 lives. The 26-11 attack makes us think that are we really independent.

Today we afraid to move out of our houses, we don’t trust anyone ,we are afraid of growing terrorism which is killing number of innocent without any reason but what are we doing to control it. Every time we step out we do candle marches but the result is still on wait.
